In Italy, at the end of XIX century, were built special buildings especially in Tuscan , Liguria and Emilia Romagna seasides, called “Colonie marine”: they were huge structures whose aim were to prevent diseases such as rickets and tuberculosis, which caused severe damages and increased the death rate especially among poor children. The “Colonie marine” reach their maximum development during the Fascism, were many new structures were builded following the principles of Rationalist architecture: their function were not only to prevent diseases, but also to strenghten childrens with gymnastic and open air activities (they were the tomorrow soldiers!). Their importance declined after the economic boom in Italy (’60s) and many of them ruined. Some of them were fortunately recently restored for other purposes. The depicted girl with her trolley, who is just arrived at one of the Colonie Marine, seems a bit disturbed. I wonder why. And you?
